A professional hail damage inspection involves much more than climbing onto a roof and looking for black spots on the shingles.

When I inspect a roof after a Central Arkansas hailstorm, I’m trying to answer several questions.

Did hail actually strike the property?

Is there legitimate hail damage to the roofing materials?

How widespread is the damage?

Which slopes and components were affected?

Could what I’m seeing be normal wear or another type of damage?

And if there is legitimate storm damage, how well can I document what actually happened?

After nearly ten years in roofing, I’ve learned that a good hail inspection is less about finding one dramatic mark and more about putting all of the evidence together.

The Inspection Starts Before I Ever Look at the Shingles

When most people think of a roof inspection, their mind immediately jumps to the shingles. But a thorough inspection actually happens in stages. Long before I’m walking the peak of your roof, I’m piecing together the story of the storm.

Here is how a professional evaluates a property, step by step:

1. Ground-Level Clues (Collateral Damage)

One of the first things I want to understand is what happened around the rest of the property. Before my ladder even comes off the truck, I am scanning the yard and the exterior of the house for collateral damage.

I’m looking closely at:

This collateral damage is crucial. It helps establish without a doubt that hail reached the property, and it gives us valuable information about the severity and directional path of the storm. However, collateral damage down below doesn’t automatically prove the asphalt shingles up top were compromised.

2. The “From the Ladder” View (Soft Metals)

As I move up to the roofline, the next phase of the inspection begins. Soft metals are highly sensitive to hail strikes and act as a reliable indicator of what the shingles might have endured.

From the ladder, I am checking:

If hail was large enough and dense enough to dent these soft metal components, it tells me exactly what to look for—and how severe it might be—once I step onto the roof itself.

3. The Shingles Themselves

Finally, we get to what everyone thinks of first: the asphalt shingles. Real hail can damage roofing systems in several distinct ways.

When I am closely inspecting your shingles, I am looking for:

Finding evidence consistent with a hail strike is a critical part of my job. But as any experienced roofer will tell you, identifying a possible impact is only the beginning of the process.

One of the Most Important Questions Is What Isn’t Hail Damage

There are quite a few conditions that can resemble hail damage.

IBHS has documented normal granule shedding and blistering as part of natural roof weathering, while GAF likewise recognizes that granule loss can have causes other than a recent storm.

That’s why I don’t like the idea of someone getting on a roof, circling the first few dark spots they see, and immediately declaring that the roof needs to be replaced.

The damage needs to make sense.

Is There a Consistent Pattern of Legitimate Damage?

Real hail impacts tend to be “randomly consistent” rather than forming suspiciously uniform or repetitive patterns.

The amount of damage may also differ across the roof.

One slope may have more visible impacts than another. Ridge caps may respond differently from field shingles. One portion of the roof may have been partially protected by trees or another structure.

The age and condition of the roofing material matter as well.

A newer shingle and an older weathered shingle may respond very differently to the same storm.

That’s why a proper inspection should consider the entire roof rather than relying on one isolated mark.

Why Ridge Caps Matter

I pay particular attention to ridge and hip caps during hail inspections.

Because of their shape and location, these shingles can be vulnerable to impact and can sometimes provide useful evidence when evaluating the roof.

I still wouldn’t diagnose an entire roof based on the ridge alone.

It’s one more piece of the larger picture.

Granule Loss Has to Be Evaluated in Context

Granule loss is one of the most recognizable potential signs of hail damage, but it can also be one of the easiest things to misunderstand.

Asphalt shingles naturally lose some granules.

New shingles can shed excess granules.

Older shingles may lose granules because of years of weathering.

Blisters and foot traffic can also disturb the surface.

What matters is whether the granule loss is consistent with recent physical impact and whether the rest of the evidence supports that conclusion.

IBHS research has also shown why significant hail related granule loss matters. When protective granules are displaced, the asphalt underneath can become more exposed to sunlight and weathering, which can accelerate the aging process.

The Age and Condition of the Roof Matter

A storm doesn’t happen in a vacuum.

Before the hail ever arrived, the roof already had a certain age, condition, installation quality, and history of weather exposure.

All of that matters.

If a shingle is already brittle and heavily deteriorated, it may respond differently to impact than the same product would have when it was new.

That doesn’t mean legitimate storm damage should be dismissed because a roof is older.

It means the inspector needs to distinguish new storm damage from preexisting conditions as accurately as possible.

Weather Reports Can Help, but They Don’t Inspect the Roof

Today we have access to much better storm data than roofers had decades ago.

Weather reports and mapping can help us understand whether hail was reported near a property and approximately when a storm moved through.

I use that information as supporting evidence.

I don’t use it as a substitute for inspecting the roof.

A report saying hail fell in Hot Springs or Benton does not prove that a particular house suffered roof damage.

The physical evidence on the property still matters most.

Documentation Matters

If legitimate hail damage is present, good documentation becomes important.

That may include photographs of the affected shingles, collateral damage, different roof slopes, ridge caps, accessories, and other relevant conditions.

I want the photos and notes to clearly show what I saw rather than relying on vague statements such as:

“This roof has hail damage.”

Good documentation should help another person understand why I reached that conclusion.

That becomes especially valuable if the homeowner ultimately needs to involve an insurance carrier.

Experience With Insurance Related Roof Inspections Is an Added Benefit

This is another reason I think it matters who performs the inspection.

Insurance carriers do not all handle roof claims in exactly the same way. Major insurers publish different claim and inspection processes, and every claim is ultimately evaluated under the homeowner’s specific policy. State Farm, Allstate, and Travelers, for example, each describe their own processes for inspecting and evaluating property claims.

A roofing contractor does not decide whether an insurance policy provides coverage.

That’s the insurance carrier’s job.

But there is real value in working with a roofer who has experience with insurance related repairs and understands the types of roofing information and documentation carriers commonly need when evaluating storm damage.

If legitimate damage exists, I want to be able to clearly communicate things such as:

The goal isn’t to shape the inspection around what an insurance company wants to hear.

It’s to document legitimate roofing damage well enough that everyone involved is working from accurate information.

The Bottom Line

A professional hail inspection is more involved than simply searching for dark spots on shingles.

It means evaluating collateral damage, shingle condition, granule loss, bruising, fractures, ridge caps, weathering, storm patterns, and the roof as a whole.

It also means knowing when something isn’t hail damage.

For homeowners in Hot Springs, Hot Springs Village, Benton, Malvern, and throughout Central Arkansas, I think that experience becomes even more valuable when insurance may eventually be involved.

The goal should always be the same:

Identify what is actually there, document it clearly, and give the homeowner an honest assessment.
